Abstract Submission

General Guidelines for 2016 MANA Abstract Submissions

Abstract submissions are now closed. 

The deadline for submitting an abstract has been extended until Friday, February 12! Don't miss this opportunity to share your knowledge, wisdom, and experience with the MANA Conference.
It is the responsibility of the abstract submitter to read and adhere to the contents of this document.

You are required to submit the following information. Abstracts that are incomplete, late or not consistent with the format will not be considered. The submission of an abstract does not guarantee participation in the program.

All general abstracts submitted for oral presentation must go beyond MEAC/ACNM core competencies or show new learning (new research, new models, etc.) and have appropriate documentation of references. Topics relevant to full-scope clinical midwifery are sought including primary care, evidence-based practice, global health, education, business, and policy that expand on current practice or introduce novel approaches to care.  

Abstract Review Process

Phase 1: Submit on-line

Required information for consideration of your abstract:

  • Complete speaker contact information and credentials for each speaker
  • Choose which track best describes your topic. Tracks include: clinical skills, educator, global health, clinical issues, legal concerns and general interest
  • An outline of your proposed session
  • Brief description of your session (200 words max.)
  • Brief biography for each speaker (200 words max.)
  • Cultural safety (200 words max.) More information below

Round 1: The Program Committee will begin to review the abstracts after the call for abstracts has closed (January 31, 2016 Deadline extended to Friday, February 12!) Round 1 of this review process is blind. All identifying information from the abstract is removed. Those selected then move to Round 2.

Round 2: Identifying information is disclosed to the Program Committee as the final selection process continues. You will then be asked to submit a Curriculum Vitae/Resume for all speakers.

Phase 2: All submitters will be notified at the end of the selection process regarding acceptance or rejection.

If selected, a complete abstract is required. This will include:

  • behavioral objectives
  • references/resources for your session

Abstract submitters must adhere to the following rules:

  • MANA reserves the right to cancel a presentation based on noncompliance at any point on any issue. This includes but is not limited to: failure to complete Phase 2, failure to return signed speaker contract, not notifying CEU Chairperson of presenter changes, failure to communicate in a timely manner, 
  • The individual submitting the abstract is considered the primary contact. All correspondence about the abstract will be emailed to the primary contact person ONLY. The primary contact person is responsible for providing any communication details to the other presenters. Speakers may NOT be added after abstract submission. If it becomes necessary to make a change of speaker, this information will be communicated to the CEU Chairperson.  
  • Under no circumstances may a session be used as a place for direct promotion of a presenter's product, service, or monetary self-interest. Sales pitches disguised as presentations will not be considered. 

Presentation Guidelines

  • All Preconference Workshop sessions will be identified as half day (4 hours) or full day (8 hours). 
  • All Concurrent breakout presentations will run 90 minutes. 
  • Plenary sessions are 50 minutes (plus 10 minutes for questions)

General Program Issues

If abstract is accepted, presenter(s) agree to:  

  • All presenters must register to attend the MANA 2016 conference for at least the day of their presentation, including poster presenters.
  • ALL presenters must submit signed presenter agreements.  
  • Presenters must use PowerPoint to present their session. 
  • Presenters agree to be available to appear any day MANA assigns Concurrent Sessions. Pre-conference sessions are Thursday, October 13, 2016. The general conference is Friday, October 14, 2016 through Sunday October 16, 2016
  • Five educational sessions will run concurrently.  
  • MANA reserves the right to revise presentation titles, reassign the identified topic area, or edit the program summary for promotional and program materials.  


Concurrent Education Sessions

  • Presenter/s are responsible for their own travel & all expenses related to presentation.  
  • Presenters are eligible for one complimentary conference registration on the day they are speaking.  This is ONLY provided to the primary presenter unless otherwise pre-approved and authorized by MANA in advance.  

Preconference Workshops

  • Presenter/s are responsible for their own travel & all expenses related to presentation. 
  • MANA splits preconference income with the presenter 50/50 after expenses. 
  • MANA does not duplicate handouts, but will keep the presenter informed in advance of how many participants to anticipate (plus walk-ins) so the presenter can be prepared. 


  • MANA does not provide any form of honoraria for these presentations. 

Note: Concurrent Education Session and Preconference Workshop Presenters are required to make their own reservations at the contracted hotel in their own name. 

Presenter on site responsibilities: 

  • Check in at conference registration desk.
  • Bring PowerPoint presentation on portable storage device (flash, jump, thumb drive.) Laptops will be provided for the conference general session and breakout rooms. For preconference sessions, presenters must bring their own laptops. 
  • Check in to session/workshop room 20 minutes prior to start time.

We highly recommend you keep a copy of all this information for your records. We recommend writing your abstract submission in Word and then cutting and pasting it onto this submission form. This will avoid panic should there be any electronic glitches!


  • Many of the fields are mandatory and must be filled in before you can submit your form.
  • Fill out a separate form for each individual session you would like the committee to consider.
  • Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

* Please note that because half and full day pre-conference workshops are offered at an additional cost to the conference registration, MANA shares profits 50/50 with presenters AFTER expenses are deducted. For the 2016 conference, expenses will be primarily audio  visual rental and labor expenses. We do not offer coffee breaks or meals on pre-conference day. MANA will confer with selected presenters to set fees. (Recent fees for comparison sake have been approximately $75 for half day and $150 for full day workshops).
