Numbers of Midwives

One of the most common questions asked of the MANA Press Officer is the number of midwives of each type in the United States.

There are approximately 5700 Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), 1100 Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and 1300-2300 Direct-Entry Midwives (DEMs) in the United States today. The number of DEMs is difficult to quantify because direct-entry midwifery is not regulated in every state.
