Midwives Model of Care Supporter

Introduction from the Student Committee Chair

My name is Janelle Lucido-Conate. I am a student midwife in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (formerly in Berkeley California) with National College of Midwifery. I have relocated to Philadelphia this spring (2009) where I am working with several local midwives. I attended births with Judy Luce in the Bay Area for two years and was about a year away from taking the NARM and am now expecting in January 2010.

I attended the Midwifery Today Conference in Eugene in spring 2009 and met so many beautiful student midwives who were all discussing similar topics and asking the similar questions to those I was discussing with the students in the Bay Area. This inspired me to begin MANA’s Students and New Midwives Yahoo group. I feel that as students we have much to offer each other across state lines. I also met some very savvy nurses who inspired me, and I felt that it would be wonderful to have a group that joined our conversations between students pursuing DEM midwifery as well as CNM midwifery.

Our new yahoo group is <MANAStudentsandNewMidwives@yahoogroups.com>. All memberships to the group need to be approved by the moderator. Students do not need to be members of MANA to participate in this group, although we do encourage it.

In addition to these pursuits I have been asked by the MANA Board to be the Student Committee Chair. This is a great honor, and I am excited to work with other students to reduce the barriers to midwifery. We will meet annually as a committee at the MANA conferences and communicate often on the MANA Students and New Midwives Yahoo group. This is a brand new committee, so at the conference in October we will brainstorm as a group and make a proposal to the board as to what we envision for the committee.

As the committee chair I will oversee a student newsletter. There will be a link on MANA’s website for the newsletter. If you are a student who would like to send in a bio or a birth story from the perspective of student as primary, please contact me at students@mana.org. If you are a student who is not able to make it to the conference this year and you have ideas for the Student Committee, please contact me or join the yahoo group and start a discussion. A diversity of voices is welcome and encouraged.
