International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Update

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Update

Of course you know 2020 has been designated as the International Year of the Midwife and the Nurse by the World Health Organization (WHO), but did you know 2020 is the first year of the Decade of the Midwife? ICM is working on an action plan for the decade, and your input is needed. More on that in a minute.

As you also know, the Triennial Congress scheduled for Bali 2020 has been postponed until 2021. Still, the work of ICM will carry on. There will be a virtual meeting this summer to keep up with ICM business, elections, and determining the strategic directions of the confederation.

Proposals and positions statements will be set aside until we meeting in person in 2021.

Did you know as voting member of MANA you are a member of the ICM international section? As an ICM council delegate representing MANA, your input is very important to me. We need your thoughts on the strategic directions that ICM moves forward with, so here is where you come in. MANA will be submitting our rankings of the following strategic issues, and this is your chance to give input, but there isn’t much time! Your survey must be submitted by midnight on May 7, 2020! So, if you feel inclined to participate in guiding the new direction of ICM, please take the ICM Strategy Survey.

The survey consists of one question only, asking you to rank the 13 most important strategic issues for ICM for the 2021-2023 triennium. Based on results from the Member Survey (2019) and other reports, we have provided a list of 12 strategic issues for you to consider, plus the option to suggest a strategy that may not be mentioned.

  • Leadership for midwives, nationally, regionally, and globally
  • Communication and advocacy
  • Strong regional support
  • Quality of midwifery care (education, regulation, research, and respectful care)
  • Strengthening midwives associations
  • Ensuring a sustainable ICM
  • Strengthening the work environment of midwives
  • Strengthening midwifery as a profession (professional framework)
  • Promoting midwife led continuity of care
  • Promoting midwifery as a separate profession to nursing
  • Promoting gender equity for women and midwives
  • Strengthening midwifery services in humanitarian and emergency settings
  • (Your Strategic Suggestion)

If any of the above topics matter to you, please consider taking the ICM Strategy Survey!

Watch our enews for more updates on ICM and the developments of the summer!

Respectfully submitted,

Colleen Donovan-Batson, ICM Council Delegate
