National Queer and Trans Birth Workers Convening: Challenging Barriers, Taking Space

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 - 2:00pm to 6:00pm

The National Queer and Trans Birth Workers Convening: Challenging Barriers, Taking Space will kick off the annual conference! This convening will happen at the conference hotel on Wednesday, November 1st from 2:00pm - 6:00pm with an informal dinner to follow.

The convening is open to all LGBTQIA and gender non-conforming birth workers and folks who are interested in birth support. The event is meant to be a space for queer, trans and gender non-conforming folks to build community, expand possibilities, and help each other break down barriers to access and care and navigate the unique challenges we face.

In order to support this work now and in the future, we’re asking for a sliding scale donation of $20 to register. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.  Allies of the community who would like to support the convening please make a donation. All funds will be used to directly fund this year’s National Queer and Trans Birth Workers Convening and any work that grows out of it.

Ticket and donation information here.

Midwifery Care Reimbursement Identification Project Town Hall

Wednesday, December 6, 2017 - 8:00am to 10:00am

Midwives across the United States struggle with being reimbursed for their services. States have different models for Medicaid reimbursement and insurers set their own, sometimes unfair rules. MANA is interested in the experiences of members and seeks to identify their problems and concerns, and develop reimbursement strategies on a more global scale, in conjunction with other complementary providers represented by the Integrative Health Policy Consortium.

MANA Town Hall — Listening to Members
As part of the Midwifery Care Reimbursement Identification Project, we want to hear your thoughts and concerns regarding the current state of insurance reimbursement of midwifery care. Join us for an online Town Hall meeting on December 6th at 10:00 am PST. Register for the meeting here.

You can also participate in the project by filling out a survey of your experiences. Access the survey here.

The ballot opened on January 8 and will be available until midnight February 7. Ballots were emailed to MANA members on January 8 via SurveyMonkey. If you did not receive a ballot, and believe that you should have, please email Marie.

The MANA Stats Fetal, Neonatal Mortality Review (FNMR) Project: Preliminary Findings and Implications for Practice

Wednesday, February 21, 2018 - 1:30pm to 3:00pm

A webinar with Dr. Melissa Cheney

In this webinar, cosponsored by MANA and NACPM, Dr. Melissa Cheyney will describe findings from a study designed to examine all fetal and neonatal deaths recorded in MANA Stats between 2004 and 2016. Using a modified Fetal-Infant-Mortality-Review (FIMR) approach, midwife-researchers conducted detailed interviews with midwives for all non-miscarriage fetal and neonatal deaths in the sample. The objective was to clarify the gestational age at which the death occurred and to properly classify late miscarriages.

The reviewers also collected qualitative data on when, how, and why the death occurred, as well as data on whether an autopsy was conducted, and the official cause of death assigned via medical examiner or coroner’s report. Using the three delays model as proposed by Thaddeus and Maine (1994), she discusses rates of intrapartum and neonatal death in a large sample of more than 50,000 planned, midwife-led, community births (home and birth center) in the United States. She will also provide an in-depth thematic analysis of the primary contributors to mortality in the sample.

Findings indicate that while the overall rate of death is low, there are three major contributors to fetal and neonatal mortality, including: 1) delays in the decision to transfer to the hospital due to failure to identify early signs of fetal distress and/or hesitancy to transport due to fear of “punitive cesarean section”; 2) delays in reaching care due to distance from the hospital or fractured collaborations with Emergency Medical Services; and 3) delays in receiving care once arriving at the hospital due to fear, poor inter-professional communication, blaming and shaming.

We hope you will join MANA and NACPM to hear this important information and participate in the discussion that will follow.
