Open Letter to the producers of the Today Show
You were probably as outraged as we were to see the NBC's Today Show on September 11th entitled "The Perils of Home Birth." It was biased, inaccurate, and sensational, depicting women who choose home births as self-indulgent by likening home birth to a spa treatment. It also implied that hospitals are the safest place for all women to give birth, even low-risk women, making it clear that NBC did not do adequate research to verify its claims. More > > >

Geradine Simkins' Response to the ACNM
TO: Open Letter to the ACNM Board of Directors and Executive Director
I am a CNM and a member of the ACNM and I say very emphatically- not in my name! I do not support your recent decision to publicly and aggressively oppose the efforts of a broad-based coalition of six national midwifery and consumer organizations seeking federal recognition of the Certified Professional midwife. Your position, to me, is indefensible. More > > >

September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month. Did you know that 1,687 babies died before age one in 2007 in the state of Florida alone? The 2009 Campaign for Healthier Babies is drawing attention to infant mortality by knitting or crocheting one infant hat for every baby who did not reach their first birthday.
Jennie Joseph, Director of The Birth Place in Winter Garden, emphasizes that "Many babies are being born too soon, too small, or too sick to survive."
Please join us in our endeavor to promote early prenatal care, reduce prematurity and low-birth weight and save the lives of our children! The hats will be displayed at a rally in September (date & time TBA). You can help by knitting or crocheting one or more infant hats and bringing or mailing your hat(s) by September 1, 2009 to:
The Birth Place
1130 E. Plant St.
Winter Garden, FL 34787
